JOB HUNTING

Hear from an expert how to find a meaningful and fulfilling job from a person who owned a staffing and search firm for 25 years. It’s easier than you think! |
You may be the best qualified for the job you are applying for, but qualifications aren’t as important as your likability and your interview skills. I have seen this time after time – an immensely qualified candidate that got shut out by the competition because of appearance, behavior, weird questions or interview skills. It’s true there is a science to interviewing for a job and you can absorb all you need to know from my easy to read GET and KEEP a Job e-book plan.
Do you have dreams of a better future for yourself?

Just think – no matter what situation you’re in or how bad things are for you, soon you can improve your situation and make your life better than it is today.
I will share with you the secrets of finding great employment and how to become more promotable.
You can get more information in an afternoon than you can by going to 20 employment or staffing agencies. You may have already been to many agencies and you know how time consuming it is and how unhelpful and unspecific traditional agencies are.
I write in reference to Jean Kelley’s handbook Get A Job Keep A Job. As a faculty member of a public high school in rural Oklahoma, I am frequently called upon to assist with projects and events not directly related to my job description. During one of these events, I first became familiar with this handbook. I had been asked by my administration to chair the senior graduation committee whose objective is to coordinate all the senior activities prior to the graduation ceremony itself as well as plan, coordinate, and supervise the graduation ceremony. During this time, each senior received a complimentary copy of Ms. Kelley’s book from Mr. Lee K. Boothby of the Newfield Exploration Mid-Continent, Inc. of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mr. Boothby had been kind enough to send a few extra books, so being a lifelong educator and an avid reader, I took one of the books home and intended it to be for leisure reading. However, after only reading a few pages, I realized that this book held the key to unlocking the job market for my students in alternative education. Consequently, after the graduating class had left our halls, I confiscated the left over books and promptly added them to my alternative education inventory. When school began that August, I began using the book as part of my Basic Life Skills curriculum, and now, after several years, this book has become embedded in my curriculum.
The joy of the book is its simplicity. I have taught for twenty years and hold a master’s degree in education, so I feel that I do have good insight to instructional material. Many authors and book companies attempt to pack their products with as much information as possible, thus, many times, creating a book, no doubt, with a tremendous amount of eye appeal. However, in their creating of a book with great aesthetic appeal, they also create a book with a tremendous amount of what educators refer to as “fluff.” The task then is enormous, for both the teacher and the student, to find the actual usable information. Many times, the student simply gives up and tosses the book aside. However, this is not the case with Ms. Kelley’s book. Ms. Kelley’s handbook is extremely user friendly. The information is not only quickly assessable but also very pertinent for today’s young job seeker.
Without hesitation, I whole-heartedly recommend Jean Kelley’s Get A Job Keep A Job handbook. I have successfully used it extensively for the past several years as part of my skills training curriculum in my classroom. I have had such great success with it that many of my colleagues are now also using the book in their own classrooms. Not overwhelming to the weaker student but engaging to the most gifted student, this handbook is full of good information that helps the student’s transition from the school setting to the work place. In my opinion, this book should be required reading for all high school students.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Dianna Butler

Jean Kelley's book, Get A Job, Keep A Job, gives the most practical advice that even a teenager can understand. I use it to teach high school students the basics of getting and keeping a job! I grew up in a family where these same principles were discussed on a regular basis. My dad taught my brothers and sister and I to be well-rounded individuals by using the following concepts on a regular basis: "Look him in the eye. Give a firm handshake. Practice the Golden Rule. Your first impression is your last impression."
These are the basic tools for living a well-rounded life that we seem to forget, or that people simply do not teach the youth today. Jean Kelley got it right when she wrote her book. Every parent, teen, and adolescent should read it for simple, good, honest living! Whether you are in the car, at the dinner table, or simply sitting around the living room, you can discuss these simple techniques for living life and getting a job because they go hand in hand and will enhance your skills for achieving a life well lived.

Before we go on, let me tell you my story:
My first experience in college was a bad one and I quit after the first semester. Not having any money, I had to move back in with my parents. This was not a good experience for them or for me.
As I mentioned earlier, in my first two years of employment, I had eight jobs and I was fired from six of them. Some of them were good jobs too. I desperately wanted to work in retail but no one would hire me because I didn’t have experience.
So I had to get jobs that were available to me. I was a Doctor’s Assistant, a collector, a nurse aid, a sales person for a bookkeeping service, a receptionist, a hardware buyer, a retail demonstrator, a cashier, and a waitress (several times). I even sold land!
The last job I had before I started as an employment counselor was a great job. It was for a national car rental company. I worked at the airport and I was thrilled to have such a good job. My problem was I couldn’t seem to get to work on time. When I did get to work on time I would spread my makeup and mirror on the counter and do my personal grooming at WORK!
The baggage handlers were good friends of mine and they knew that I was in big trouble because I couldn’t’ seem to make it to work on time, so they allowed me to ride the conveyor belt with the luggage into the terminal.
My boss was in town one day and an early flight had arrived. The people who were waiting on their baggage made such a noise that my boss came around the counter to see what the commotion was all about. What she saw was a girl sitting on the conveyor belt with a Wonder Bread plastic bag containing make-up in one hand, and a wig and a purse in the other hand. I got fired.
Getting fired was old hat to me by then, so I started out to find another job. It was back to the employment agencies.
One of the agencies where I applied commented on my personality and exuberance and asked me if I would spy for them. They wanted me to go down the street and find out where a really high paying job was so they could get the job order and fill it. I said, “Sure, I’m not doing anything today.” The job paid four or five times more than the jobs I had been working, and I had no fear so I headed there right away.
There was an employment agency down the street from there. So I walked into the agency and filled out the application. Where it asked for salary requirements I wrote $10,000. When they asked how much I had been making, I told them $165 an hour. My application was so startling to the receptionist she gave my application to the owner and I was interviewed by her. I never did find out where that job was, but she sent me on several interviews.
I was making minimum wage and qualified for free health care at a clinic in Tulsa. One day as I was sitting in line for my annual exam, I decided I didn’t want to live like this anymore. I called the woman who interviewed me at the employment service where I applied.
I found a phone at the clinic and called the woman who had been sending me on interviews and asked, “Do you have an empty desk?” She said, “I don’t know what you mean.” I replied, “I want to work for you.” I told her that if I didn’t do better at finding jobs for people than anyone else had EVER done, she could fire me.
By that time I was getting quite good at getting jobs and figured I could help others too. The job was straight commission and I would have my own office and a great big desk. I loved working for her and loved working on commission. The rest is history.
You might be saying to yourself, “This won’t help me, I’m different. After all she’s made it." Unlike other books written on this subject, I have experience.
